# Shipping in Shopify for Danish and Nordic stores: the complete guide

Shopify has a solid shipping engine, but a Danish store needs more: pickup points, address validation and labels for Danish carriers. This guide takes you through the whole setup, step by step.

Shipping decides whether a Danish customer completes the order. Danes expect to pick a parcel shop or a parcel locker, and they expect the price to be right. Shopify gives you the base, and an app fills the gaps. This guide shows you how the two parts fit together.

## 1. How shipping works in Shopify

Shopify's shipping settings live under Settings, Shipping and delivery. Four concepts do all the work.

### Shipping profiles

A profile is a set of products with their own shipping setup. The general profile covers every product. You add a custom profile when some products ship differently, for example furniture on a pallet.

### Zones

Inside a profile you create zones: groups of countries or regions. A Danish store often has a zone for Denmark, one for the Nordics and one for the rest of Europe.

### Rates and conditions

Each zone gets one or more rates. A rate is a shipping method with a name and a price. You can add a condition so the rate only shows between a minimum and a maximum weight, or between a minimum and a maximum order value. Free shipping above a certain amount is a rate with a price of zero and a condition on order value.

### Local pickup

Local pickup lets a customer collect the order at your own location. It is separate from carrier pickup points.

Shopify Markets adds currency and pricing per market, but the shipping logic stays in the profiles and zones.

## 2. What Shopify cannot do alone for a Danish store

The built-in rates are static. They cannot look up anything about the customer or the cart beyond weight and value. For a Danish store, four things are missing:

- Pickup points. Shopify has no list of parcel shops or parcel lockers for GLS, PostNord, DAO or Bring.
- Address validation. Shopify accepts an address without a house number, and the carrier then charges you a penalty fee.
- Rules by product or zip code. You cannot hide a method for a product tag, a customer tag or a zip code range, such as the non-bridged islands.
- Labels for Danish carriers. Shopify prints no GLS, PostNord, DAO or Bring labels.

An app solves these with live rates, and live rates need the Carrier Calculated Rates feature in Shopify. Advanced and Plus include it, on Grow it is an add-on through Shopify support, and Basic cannot get it. Read [how to get Carrier Calculated Rates](https://pakkeshopper.com/guides/carrier-calculated-rates/) before you install anything.

## 3. Choosing carriers for Denmark and the Nordics

Pick carriers by the destinations you ship to and the delivery types your customers want:

- [GLS](https://pakkeshopper.com/carriers/gls/): the most common pickup-point carrier for Danish stores, with GLS Pakkeshop and home delivery in Denmark.
- [PostNord](https://pakkeshopper.com/carriers/postnord/): pickup points, parcel lockers and home delivery in Denmark and Sweden. Outside the Nordics PostNord hands parcels to DPD.
- [DAO](https://pakkeshopper.com/carriers/dao/): pickup points and home delivery in Denmark.
- [Bring](https://pakkeshopper.com/carriers/bring/): pickup points and home delivery in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Shoppers in Norway see it as Posten, and shoppers in Finland see Posti.

Many stores run two carriers side by side so the customer can pick the closest point. Pakkeshopper prints labels for all four directly (PostNord needs your PostNord customer number) and tracks their parcels. The free Starter plan gives you one carrier; Pro and up give you all carriers.

## 4. Pickup points, home delivery or parcel lockers

Offer more than one delivery type and let the customer decide:

- Pickup points (parcel shops) are the Danish default. The customer picks a shop from a list or a map, with distance and opening hours.
- Parcel lockers, for example PostNord's pakkeboks, are unmanned and open around the clock. If your products need a signature or a person at the counter, hide unmanned points with one setting.
- Home delivery suits heavy or bulky items and business customers.

Name the methods clearly in the checkout, for example "GLS Pakkeshop" and "PostNord Home delivery", and put the most used method first. Pakkeshopper lets you place methods anywhere in the checkout list.

## 5. Shipping rules and free shipping thresholds

Rules decide which methods a customer sees. Common rules for a Danish store:

1. Weight: show pallet shipping above 20 kg and hide the parcel methods.
2. Order value: free shipping above your threshold.
3. Products: hide pickup points for a product tag such as "bulky".
4. Zip codes: a surcharge for the non-bridged islands, with one-click presets.
5. Country: separate methods for Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Watch the free shipping threshold. In Shopify, a discount code can bring the order under the threshold while the customer still gets free shipping. Pakkeshopper deducts the discount code before it applies the threshold, and you can turn this on or off per shop. See [shipping rules](https://pakkeshopper.com/features/shipping-rules/) and the guide to [free shipping and discount codes](https://pakkeshopper.com/guides/free-shipping-discount-codes/).

## 6. Labels, Print Agent and the warehouse flow

A smooth warehouse flow looks like this:

1. Print the label from the order, or print labels in bulk from the orders list.
2. Mark the order as fulfilled with the tracking number in the same step. Shopify then sends its shipping confirmation e-mail.
3. Let Print Agent, a free app for Windows and Mac, send each label to the label printer the moment it is created.
4. Turn on return labels so a return label prints after each shipping label.

Warehouse staff can also pick, pack, scan barcodes and print to Brother QL printers from an iPhone app. If you use a warehouse system such as Shipmondo, Peak WMS or Traede, the orders flow in with carrier and pickup point. Read more about [label printing](https://pakkeshopper.com/features/label-printing/).

## 7. Tracking

Tracking tells you where the parcels are and which ones need attention. Pakkeshopper tracks GLS, PostNord, Bring, DAO, DHL and PostNL and shows delivery rate, median transit time, exceptions and returns per carrier. A list collects parcels that are stuck in transit, uncollected at a pickup point or on the way back. Shopify Flow triggers let you act automatically, for example when a parcel has waited at a pickup point for four days. See [tracking](https://pakkeshopper.com/features/tracking/).

## 8. Checklist before launch

1. Confirm that Carrier Calculated Rates is active in the shipping settings.
2. Test the checkout with a Danish address and a house number. Check every method, the pickup point list and the prices.
3. Remember the 24-hour cache: change the house number or the cart to get fresh rates after each change.
4. Test address validation with an address without a house number. The checkout must block the order.
5. Test a discount code against your free shipping threshold.
6. Place a test order and check the order confirmation page: carrier logo, delivery status and the chosen pickup point.
7. Print a label, fulfil the order and check that the shipping confirmation e-mail arrives.
8. Test Apple Pay or Google Pay if you offer them.

When all eight pass, you are ready to launch.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Shopify show pickup points without an app?

No. Shopify's own shipping settings have no parcel shops or parcel lockers for GLS, PostNord, DAO or Bring. A shipping app adds them through Carrier Calculated Rates.

### Which carrier should a Danish store start with?

GLS is the most common pickup-point carrier for Danish stores. PostNord adds parcel lockers and covers Sweden. DAO covers Denmark, and Bring covers Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

### Why do my new shipping rates not show in the checkout?

Shopify caches rates for up to 24 hours. Change the house number or the cart contents to get fresh rates while you test.

### Do I need a paid Pakkeshopper plan?

Starter is free for the first 100 orders per month with one carrier. All carriers, label printing and statistics start at Pro, which costs 19 USD per month.
